CBE Students Awarded Prizes

2018 AIChE Student Conference Trip • Pittsburgh, PA

The American Institute of Chemical Engineers held its national student conference from October 26-29 in Pittsburgh, PA at the David L. Lawrence Convention Center. UNM’s student AIChE chapter attended the event, bringing 18 undergraduate students from the Chemical and Biological Engineering Department. The conference consisted of professional workshops, career development, networking, and a student research poster competition. In total, UNM won four awards at the competition, including two 1st places.

The award winners are:

(Senior) Edward Strach, 3rd place BiotechnologyBiocidal Properties of Polythiopene Polyelectrolyte Derivatives Under Photolytic and Dark Conditions

(Senior) Aidira Macias Gonzales, 1st place Biotechnology – Acoustically Assisted Droplet Generation Using Water-in-Water Systems for Cell Culturing Microgels

(Senior) Angelea Maestas, 1st place Materials Engineering – The Endocytotic Fate of a Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticle Supported Lipid Bilayer CRISPR Delivery Vehicle

(Sophomore) David Arnot, 2nd place Petroleum & Fuels – Ion Selective Separators for Rechargeable Alkaline Zn/MnO2 batteries

Congratulations to the four winners, it is always exciting to see the research from UNM succeeding at the national level! Additionally, AIChE is working hard on their Chem-E car in preparation for competition at the regional conference in the Spring. Meetings are Wednesdays, biweekly in CENT 1026 at 5:00 pm.
